After remaining conspicuously quiet about Florida’s Amendment 2, Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire head of Las Vegas Sands, has donated $1 million to the committee seeking to defeat Florida’s medical marijuana amendment.
Adelson wrote a check to the Drug Free Florida Committee on Sept. 9, according to state records. Other backers of the political action committee include St. Petersburg developer Mel Sembler, who contributed $1 million earlier this year, and Publix heir Carol Jenkins Barnett, who gave $800,000.
Adelson was the biggest opponent of the 2014 effort to legalize medical marijuana in Florida. It failed to win the 60 percent vote it needed to pass.
