Medical marijuana opponents warn of kid-friendly candies, a pot shop on every corner

The effort to defeat Amendment 2 is heating up, as evidenced by a full-color mailer sent out this week by Drug Free Florida Florida Committee. The campaign piece warns that if voters legalize medical marijuana, the state will be awash in kid-friendly cannabis candies peddled from some 2,000 pot shops.

“Just like in California, anyone with anxiety, migraines, trouble sleeping or a sore throat will be able to legally purchase pot,” says the mailer.

The brochure also features a photo of a tatted-up budtender, along with a sampling of John Morgan’s outrageous quotes. Drug Free Florida Committee is backed by Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire head of Las Vegas Sands, who this month donated $1 million to the anti-weed campaign.

Amendment 2 supporters say the claims amount to little more than hysteria. The ballot question seeks to limit legal weed to patients with “debilitating diseases as determined by a licensed Florida physician.” Ben Pollara, manager of the pro-Amendment 2 campaign, said the effort is designed to make cannabis available to people with cancer, epilepsy and other severe medical issues.

“The argument last time was, ‘This is medical marijuana for a hangnail or a headache,’” Pollara said. “Even if you’ve got a really bad hangnail, it probably does not rise to the level of comparable to cancer.”

A 2014 effort to legalize medical marijuana in Florida failed to win the 60 percent vote it needed to pass. Meanwhile, more than 20 states, including California and Illinois, have legalized medical marijuana.

As for kid-friendly gummies, it’s unclear if they’d be available in Florida. Colorado, which has some of the nation’s most lenient cannabis laws, recently banned the sale of edibles that could be mistaken for candy.
