Hiring a top-notch attorney isn’t cheap, a Boca Raton homeowner learned the hard way. The going rate for his lawyers from Greenberg Traurig? $695 an hour.

Back in 2008, mansion seller Rick Felberbaum unwittingly stepped into a rivalry between two heavyweights in Boca Raton real estate. Felberbaum wrote a testimonial that praised Premier Estate Properties and panned Royal Palm PropertiesRoyal Palm Properties sued for libel, and a long, costly legal battle ensued.

Spending a lot of money to go bankrupt

A jury last year ruled that Premier Estate Properties and Felberbaum didn’t defame Royal Palm Properties — but Felberbaum still was stuck with a legal tab that amounted to a small fortune.

Now, Felberbaum has won another victory in court. Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Meenu Sasser recently ruled that Royal Palm Properties must pay Felberbaum’s legal bill of $630,987.

While $695 an hour is steep for South Florida, attorneys in bigger markets — and in bankruptcy court in Delaware –routinely charge $1,000 an hour or more.

Felberbaum listed his 8,597-square-foot home for sale with Royal Palm Properties. The property languished on the market, and in 2009 Felberbaum hired Premier Estate Properties. His house soon sold for $2.8 million, and Felberbaum wrote a testimonial expressing his satisfaction with his second listing agent and his displeasure with the first agent.
