American new homes got a little smaller last year, although it’s too soon to say homebuyers have embraced tiny houses.

The median size of a new home completed last year shrank slightly, to 2,422 square feet, the U.S. Census Bureau says. That was down from 2,467 square feet in 2015.

It was the first time since 2009 that new homes downsized. But it was still the third-highest total in U.S. history.

In 1973, the typical American new home was just 1,525 square feet, the Census Bureau says.
