Here’s an intriguing arithmetic problem: How many hours must a federal inmate clock to repay a restitution order totaling $283,621?
A lot, considering Federal Prison Industries pays inmates 23 cents to $1.15 an hour. A federal judge this week ordered convicted real estate scammer Kesner Joaseus to repay victims of his scheme, in which he posed as the landlord of properties he didn’t really own and took tenants’ rent checks.
Joaseus was sentenced this year to 11 years in federal prison. A judge said half of any money he makes in prison must be repaid as restitution.
